Frequently Asked Questions

I don’t have my lesson at CMA, but I attend a weekly theory class and/or ensemble, can I enter the competition?

Only students who receive instrumental lessons from a CMA teacher are eligible to enter.

I take lessons on multiple instruments at CMA, can I enter on more than one instrument?

Of course!

What are the entry requirements for the Class Heats?

Our Class Heats are open to students from ABRSM Grade 1 to 8 level (or equivalent) on all brass, woodwind and bowed string instruments, piano, voice and acoustic guitar.

Each Class Heat lasts 1hr 30mins, but I am only free for part of that time. Can I still enter?

Students must be present throughout the entire heat. Before entering the competition, please ensure that you can commit to both the date and time of your heat as well as the relevant Level Award.

Can I arrange a rehearsal with the official competition accompanist ahead of my class heat?

All competitors receive a short rehearsal with the official competition accompanist immediately before their Heat/Award is due to begin. Due to the large number of entrants, CMA is unable to organise further rehearsals with the official accompanist on the competitor's behalf. Competitors are welcome to book and pay for advanced rehearsals through the CMA Reception or use a private accompanist if they wish, which should be clearly marked on the entry form.

I am between grades, which heat/level should I enter?

The answer is different for every competitor, and depends on the cycle of learning and forward planning. Entrants are encouraged to consult their teachers for guidance as teaching staff must sign all entry forms for validation. Ultimately, this competition aims to challenge each entrant and inspires performance with musical integrity. We encourage fair play and the choice of piece should reflect this. Select repertoire which improves musical development rather than an aiming for an easy win.
